My article on urban farm gardeners appears in Country Gardens

January 14, 2019

It’s a treat to open the mailbox in the middle of winter and find a spring-y looking magazine inside. The Early Spring 2019 issue of Country Gardens arrived over the weekend, and even more exciting for me, I’m one of the issue’s contributors!

My article is called “Urban Bounty,” and it’s about Austinites Adam Voorhes and Robin Finlay, who’ve turned their small suburban yard into a sustainable homestead-style garden, keeping chickens and bees, growing food including tons of tomatoes, cooking and drying clothes outdoors to save on energy costs, and harvesting rainwater off their roof. And it all looks terrific thanks to a smart, beautiful design by B. Jane Gardens.

Check it out when it hits newsstands, or subscribe today, and look for my article on pages 76-83.

  4. This is such a cool trend. Happy to see you writting about it in a national magazine. Hope it ispires more urban farmers. We are just starting a project similar to this. It makes me so happy. They already have chickens with coop, rain-barrels and raised bed but all DIY and falling apart. We are using 8 watering troughs for raised beds, welded wire for another arbor where they will grow loofa and beans : ) a big flagstone and DG patio and a 8 foot round trough pond. I used your pond as the inspiration photo. And sent them the blog you did so they can do it themselves. CONGRATULATIONS!

Yay, I hope my post helps them get going with their new pond, and your design sounds very cool — and very Austin with those watering troughs and welded wire! I would love to come see some Houston gardens sometime this spring. Any tours going on?
