Talking possumhaws in Southern Living

November 20, 2010

Check out the December 2010 issue of Southern Living magazine, and you’ll find an article about possumhaw holly (Ilex decidua) with a couple of quotes from yours truly.

I grew up reading Southern Living, so I’m delighted to have been contacted by its garden editor for information about how possumhaw grows west of the Mississippi River.
And if you’re wondering, it grows just fine, and I still desperately want one for my garden.

  1. We traveled to Nashville, TN a couple weeks ago to visit family. They had saved a few issues of Southern Living for me and I bought another at the airport. Unfortunately it was the T-day issue not the Christmas one so I didn’t get to read your quotes!

  2. That is so cool! Congrats!

Now the rest of the world can respect your opinion as much as your blogging friends do.

I missed this article. I will have to look at that mag again. I guess I got stuck on the tamale article.

Kudos to you Pam! I received my magazine this past week and hadn’t had a chance to look thru it yet. When I saw your post, I ran and grabbed it and read your article. I can see why you’re envious of them ~ what spectacular winter interest they would add.

In ’85, there was a long allee of Possumhaw approaching where I had some classes – the 2nd floor inside the OU football stadium! It was for our Plant Materials I class, and that was one of the first plants I learned – including how well it grew on our alkaline, clay soils. I sometimes walked out of my way to enjoy their incredible sight and berries during winter, but they looked nice in leaf, too. The memory of those trees has never left me…

Pam, I’m a subscriber and love reading about possumhaws, crape myrtles and all the other plants I can’t grow in Connecticut – hope you get that plant soon – it looks like a winner!
