Vain oxblood lily & other fall images

October 10, 2010

Like Narcissus falling in love with his own reflection, this tardy oxblood lily (Rhodophiala bifida) seems to be admiring itself in the blue gazing ball. Oh, it’s lovely but so vain!

Mexican bush sage (Salvia leucantha) is in full bloom in the hillside garden. The stock-tank pond is visible just beyond.

Zexmenia (Wedelia texana), a native with cheerful, daisy-like flowers, is easily grown from seed in unmulched soil. This one hides the skinny knees of a clump of bamboo muhly.

A simple grouping of Opuntia ficus-indica and Mexican feathergrass (Nassella tenuissima) along the foundation in the hillside garden.

Miscanthus ‘Adagio’ inflorescence — I love its spiraling seedheads.

‘Macho Mocha’ mangave, a pup from my original plant, has grown tremendously since I potted it up. Silver ponyfoot (Dichondra argentea) cascades over the edge.

Fall weather brings Autumn sage (Salvia greggii) back to life.

Like tiny red flags, the flowers brighten the upper patio and attract hummingbirds.
I wish I could be outside every day to enjoy the fall garden, but I’ve been so busy with work and a day of feeling under the weather that I’ve only had time for a quick peek now and then. Thank goodness I have a nice view of the garden from my office window.

Love that Oxblood against the gazing ball. Too funny, because I just posted too and said I’m not so fond of gazing balls. But seeing your lily right up against it is lovely. Goes to show you there’s a wrong way and at right way. My oxbloods are long gone, but I’m happy to have had them at all after the big dog-girl tried to dig them all up last year! You got a great shot of the miscanthus.

I hope you are feeling much better! Question; How do you keep the water clear in your stock tank pond? Do you use barley balls or some such? Your yard is looking fabulous. Thanks for the inspiration!

  3. You do have a nice view. Thanks for sharing it.
Hope the under the weather day is well past.
Get out and enjoy this weather.

Very beautiful images of the garden. Hope you are feeling better soon. This is a great time of year and a shame to miss even one day of it.

  5. I, too, have a hard time staying indoors – and on task – this time of year, Pam! Love the photo of the grass inflorescence…

  7. Aw… I can’t blame that oxblood lily. It’s so beautiful! 🙂

  9. Wonderful photos! Love the salvias, of course! Hope you feel better soon.
Sorry that I’ve been away so long — trying to think about gardening again.

Those oxblood lilies are so pretty. I bought some last September (wrong time, right?) and even this year they haven’t bloomed. I also ordered some this fall but they have yet to arrive. I wish I could get them in spring! Take care and hope you’re feeling better real soon.

Perhaps the Oxblood Lily was merely seeking the company of its own species and didn’t know it was looking at itself. Your photography is wonderful, and I covet the cactus in the toy truck from the previous post.
