Pretty in pink

July 24, 2021

Right after a summer rain pink rain lilies (Zephryanthes ‘Labuffarosea’) pop up, seemingly overnight. I don’t even remember planting this bulb here, but what a serendipitous pairing it makes with chartreuse ‘Everillo’ sedge. The flowers may be short-lived, but they are lovely when they appear.

Another pink beauty is this mammillaria cactus in flower. Ka-pow! So many flowers wreathed around its spiny body! The yellow-flowering hedgehog cactus (Thelocactus setispinus) isn’t bad-looking either. Cactus flowers, when they appear, are always amazing.

Impressive! I DO need to add some flowering cactus to my garden…

They are fun and easy to grow in pots and really add a wow moment when in bloom. Yes, get some!

LOVE the flowering cacti! The pink mammalaria flowers don’t look like cactus flowers to me, so always a surprise when I see them.

    • Pam/Digging says:

Cactus flowers always seem so extravagant to me, especially atop such a spare, spiny plant.

Kapow! indeed. And after what I said about my pink rain lily being shy to bloom it took a leaf from yours and blooms today. First time this year.

Those cactus look like they are happy as could be. Beautiful blooms.

  5. You’re right, the rain lilies do make an excellent companion with that bright green sedge. You should pretend that you intended it that way! Haha

I could, but I’m always so pleased to be the beneficiary of the excellent designer that Mother Nature so often proves herself to be. 😉
