Cobalt garden wall views

June 16, 2020

One thing about covid-times is I’m spending a lot more time in my own backyard. But yay for the social medium of blogging, so let’s take a look around together, shall we?

I’m loving the cobalt wall more than ever thanks to the addition of the steel planter filled with undulating feathergrass and orange bulbine. Also the quirky fiddlehead-esque metal garden stakes. And who can resist a powder-blue Yucca rostrata head peeking over the wall like Kilroy? Not me.

Micro-meadow

Bat-face cuphea (Cuphea llavea), which ought to be the official plant of bat-crazy Austin, smolders in the raised bed.

Squid agave (A. bracteosa) waves its tentacles from a tall, fluted pot.

In the side yard, the first flowers of heat-loving, shade-tolerant, deer-resistant (ka-pow!) pale pavonia (Pavonia hastata) have opened.

What’s going on in your summer garden?

That’s a brilliant container choice for the squid agave; really lets the tentacles show off!

The cobalt blue wall gives your garden a touch of the Garden Majorelle, especially with that Y. rostrata behind it. In my garden a long row of cobalt blue pots with Agaves in them does the same thing. I love it!

  3. peter schaar says:

That was supposed to be the Jardin Majorelle. Autocorrect strikes again.

Your photo of the squid agave in the pot makes me think I should try elevating mine as well. It makes a pretty picture!

    • Pam/Digging says:

I’ve always elevated my squids. They look so good on a pedestal. But really, where wouldn’t they look good?

  5. I have agave envy, Pam! The only one to survive in my zone is Agave parryi which is softer and doesn’t have the same dramatic look. The cobalt blue color is striking and so perfect for your situation. P.x

    • Pam/Digging says:

Squid agave is hardy to 10-15 degrees F, Pam. But you get much colder than that, I’m guessing?

  6. Gail says:

I love your cobalt wall, too. It’s my favorite color. Did you commission the steel planter?

    • Pam/Digging says:

Yes, I hired a woman to fabricate it for the narrow space between pool and wall.

Regarding that beautiful blue wall of your, you mention a yucca rostrata in the backgound.. The blue looks more like a yucca nelsonii which I trying to buy. Any suggestions??? David Whitaker
