Wildflower mural energizes wall on Wood Hollow Drive

October 07, 2019

Blanketflowers tower over you with electric energy along a stretch of Wood Hollow Drive in northwest Austin. Local artist Bill Tavis recently completed a zigzagging,Texas-evoking mural of our native wildflower on a large wall — actually two walls, an upper and lower spaced a few yards apart. If you stand in the right spot, the imagery aligns perfectly, and the two walls act as one.

Crossing the street for a wider view, I didn’t get the right vantage point, and the lower wall “shifted” to the right, marring the illusion. I’m sure you’ll do better when you visit for your Instagram shot. Family Xmas-card picture, anyone?

It’s a very cool mural, so go see it and enjoy this wildflower show all year long. And kudos to the City of Austin’s TEMPO program for sponsoring artists like Bill and installing temporary works of art throughout the city.

We need a city works project like that to decorate LA’s roads! It’s very cool.

I love when cities invest in public art. I bet L.A. has a bazillion artists who would take on projects like this for a little grant money.

  2. What an interesting interpretation of the blanket flower and sky line.
