Bigger than life jackalope on N. Lamar

February 23, 2019

A bigger-than-life bounder crouches on North Lamar Boulevard. “Bigger than life” may not be quite accurate, of course, seeing as the jackalope is a mythical beast of Texas legend.

Created by Ion Art for Red Velvet Events, the horned hare stands 18 feet tall, fabricated from rusty steel plates, plus whatever those silver antlers are made of. With one lucky foot raised, he strikes a curious pose, checking out passing traffic.

Jacky the Jackalope, thanks for helping to keep Austin weird. Long may you lope on North Lamar.

Kewwl! My guess is the antlers are aluminum.

I hope he doesn’t cause any traffic accidents! He is an attention-grabber.

My son Chase Meyers designed this piece along with the ATX sign at 6th and Lamar.
