Deer, egrets, and aloes and a happy Thanksgiving to you

November 22, 2018

The buck stops here. And here and here and, well, everywhere in my neighborhood in autumn. On our daily stroll, the dog and I walk a gauntlet of edgy male deer standing vigil near groups of does. It’s rutting season, and bucks like this one are not to be messed with.

On a recent walk, this handsome boy was staring down two other bucks, and I was a little nervous when we got between them – these antlered gang members ready to defend their turf.

There are no bucks to dodge at Lady Bird Lake, and this is a great time of year to enjoy the views along the hike-and-bike trail. On a 3-mile stroll yesterday, I spotted egrets soaring low over the water, turtles basking on logs, ducks paddling along, and the occasional jumping fish.

Ooh, and how about these beautiful soap aloes – still in bloom – in a silvery puddle of Dichondra argentea along a green rebar fence.

Today is Thanksgiving here in the U.S., a day to give thanks for our blessings, to feast on turkey – or a turkey cake like these insane creations at HEB? – and to spend time with family and friends. Happy Thanksgiving to all my American readers! Thank you all for being a part of my gardening tribe.

  1. If that buck was spotted in my neck of the woods someone would certainly hunt it. He’s gorgeous! I love those soap aloe! Also gorgeous! Happy Thanksgiving!

We’re smack in the middle of suburbia, so no hunting here, which is no doubt why we have so many deer in our neighborhood: it’s safe and there’s plenty to eat, and there’s a greenbelt to hide in when they’re not lounging on front lawns. 🙂

Those horny bucks can be terribly dangerous. They look magnificent with their puffed up necks and big ole antlers.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.

I don’t know what I’d do if one of them charged us. Hoping they stay focused on each other!

The bucks are very handsome but I’d steer well clear of them too. Those cakes are pretty cute. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!

Hope your Thanksgiving was wonderful! I’m certainly thankful for you and your blog!

Aw, thank you, Peter. Right back at you! We had a very nice holiday, and I hope you did too.
