Today is the last day of cactus and succulent sale at Zilker Garden

September 02, 2018

Need a plant fix today, my fellow Austinites and succulent lovers? Sunday, 9/2, is the final day of the Austin Cactus & Succulent Society’s fall show and sale at Zilker Botanical Garden.

I arrived just after opening on Saturday, and the main parking lot was already full. This is a popular event, y’all! Luckily there’s plenty of overflow parking along Stratford Drive, so don’t worry.

The sale, held indoors (air conditioning, yay), is crowded but fun. You’ll find your favorite succulent vendors there, like East Austin Succulents and Bob Barth of Oracle Gorge Nursery.

You might also spot the sharp-dressed (get it?) president of the Austin Cactus & Succulent Society, Sara Sturtevant, who graciously posed for me in her wonderful and well-chosen cactus and agave dress.

My favorite pottery maker in Austin, Rick Van Dyke, is there too, selling his handmade pots, some already planted up with succulents.

I’ve collected a number of Rick’s marvelous, tactile creations over the years.

These are my current faves, his warty, glaring-eyed monster pots.

I couldn’t resist choosing a second one and gave it an aloe hairdo when I got home.

Now it’s keeping Thing 1 company on the windowsill.

Oh, and a huge thank you to the Zilker Garden gift shop for stocking my books, Lawn Gone! and The Water-Saving Garden. I was thrilled to see them displayed prominently as I walked through the shop. Fellow gardeners, right now is the ideal time to read up on designing your reduced-lawn and waterwise garden so you can be ready to plant this fall. Only one month to go until our fall gardening season is here!

Beautiful sale, beautifully photographed. I especially love the bug – eyed creature pots. Where can I find them when I’m in Austin?

Thanks, Peter. Rick has his upcoming shows listed on his website, although it appears that page is a year out of date, unless 2017 is really meant to be 2018. He told me he’ll be at Armadillo Christmas Bazaar again this December. Otherwise, you can sometimes find a limited selection of his pots at East Austin Succulents and the other businesses listed here: https://rickvandykestudio.com/where-to-buy/

Wow, what a great event! Love Rick’s pots and bet the plant selection was fabulous. Our own Cactus and Succulent show and sale is this coming weekend & you’ve whet my appetite with this post!
