Seeds

‘Adagio’ miscanthus inflorescence
Dear readers, I feel that I’ve neglected you of late. I’ve been busy working out the details of the Garden Bloggers Spring Fling, and I didn’t do any gardening over the holidays, despite many days of beautiful weather. Finally I knew I had to set aside a few mornings in order to start a new project I’ve been mulling. So on Sunday and again today, I threw myself into a redo of the foundation bed that I redesigned not quite a year ago.

Shrubby white boneset ( Eupatorium havanense) seeds
What fickleness is this? Well, I fell in love with a monster of a variegated agave that MSS gave me, and I’m giving it a prominent place for it to do its thing (grow huge and make millions of pups, I suspect). Plus, the ‘Wonderful’ pomegranate that I was sure would be perfect for that spot proved, upon blooming last spring, to be too orange in contrast with the pinks nearby. So into the hotter back garden it went.

Mexican snapdragon vine ( Maurandya antirrhiniflora) seeds
I feel as if I’m cheating you by not showing before and after pics as I rework this bed. But it’s been very freeing to dig, transplant, and dig some more over the past couple of days without bothering with the camera or taking the time to blog. My only excuse is that I’ve wanted to just garden, and sometimes that isn’t compatible with blogging.

‘Adagio’ miscanthus foliage
I’ll show you the new look when it’s done. Until then, I offer a few seeds and grass foliage I observed today. I love their texture and the interest they provide in the January garden.

Pam: We all know how you feel! Sometimes you just want to get the job done and enjoy the moments spent re-working a bed! Can’t wait to see the finale! A garden is never really ‘done’ though is it?
You are right, Layanee. Where would be the fun in a garden that is “done”? One of the joys of gardening for me is rearranging and trying out new combinations. —Pam

You’ve been out gardening and I’ve been just looking out my windows at the landscape. It is so cold up here in Indiana right now.
I’m looking forward to your pictures of the “done (for now)” bed, but even more, I’m looking forward to seeing the bed in person when I come down for the spring fling!

My heat-loving neighbor thought I was kind of nuts yesterday when she saw me digging in low 60-degree, damp weather. Funny, huh? It all depends on your perspective, I guess. See you in April. —Pam

You just go ahead and garden. An artist must work when the muse is there.
I will be looking forward to your presentation of the completed work.
I’m glad you don’t mind the lack of a play-by-play, Layanee. I’ll take pics when I come up for a breath of air. 🙂 —Pam

Lucky you to be digging! Dig a few spadefuls for me please 🙂 We have 12º up here this morning. Brrr.
That top photo of the Adagio Miscanthus is such a beauty! I’ll look forward to seeing your reworked bed in all its splendor next spring and summer.
Will do, Kerri. Actually, it got pretty cold here last night and is supposed to stay in the 40s and 50s for the next couple of days. That’s cold for us! —Pam

Oooh… how can any of us complain about the lack of “before” pictures when you offer such lovely texture and seedheads to placate us? 🙂
I can’t wait to see what your redo looks like!
Thanks, Kim. I’ll give you a hint. The redo is heavy on agaves and aloes. —Pam

    Hi again, Pam 🙂
I completely agree with Kim – I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the seed heads too! Great pics 😀
I sometimes like to take the before and after photos as my own record and seldom publish them – except for my Pergola and Arbour posting which go back 16 years so that doesn’t really count. I too like to garden freely with the moment – its a great way to do it. I am certain you had a great time 😀
I did, Shirl. I almost always take before and afters, and, since I’ve been blogging, “durings.” So it was a departure not to do so this time. I just wanted to get out there and garden. Anyway, I’m glad you enjoyed the seed pics. —Pam
