Gorgeous succulent bowl

May 01, 2013

Wow, check out this stunning succulent bowl! It was a gift from my friend Diana of Sharing Nature’s Garden, put together by Vivero Growers Nursery, and I LOVE it!

The colorful aeonium (please let it live through our hot, humid summers!), the teeny-tiny yellow sedum (?), the snakey-looking cactus or euphorbia, that hunky concrete bowl—it all adds up to one gorgeous addition to my patio garden. Thank you, Diana!!

I’m also loving this cute, triangular skeleton pot from local artist Rick Van Dyke. I popped in a cactus that I carted back from GWA Tucson for a fun combo.

Have I shown you my newest agave acquisition? I bought this ‘Desert Diamond’ agave from Plant Delights and added Sedum mexicanum ‘Lemon Ball’, which is supposed to be more tolerant of heat and sun than ‘Angelina’ sedum, to fluff out the pot until the agave grows bigger. This baby ‘Desert Diamond’ is not as pretty as the one in their catalog, but I’m hopeful that it’ll achieve that pale coloration and red teeth over time.

And a parting look at the succulent wall (click for the how-to), all fluffed out with spring growth. Once you start growing succulents, it sure is hard to stop with just a few.

You’re Invited!
I’ll be at BookPeople on Saturday, May 4, at 4 pm , along with author Jenny Peterson, to talk briefly about design tips for losing the lawn or paring it back. Jenny will be sharing styling tips for houseplants. And we newbie authors will BOTH be signing copies of our books! Whether you have a green thumb or a brown one, let’s fill up BookPeople with people who care about plants and the earth!

The talk is free and open to the public, and I’d love to see a lot of friendly faces! If you do want an autographed book, BookPeople requires an in-store purchase. Just FYI.

I’m a HUGE fan of Rick Van Dyke–I have a whole collection of his beautiful containers. I’m jealous about the Vivero planter–I’ve been lusting after those concrete planters…

I now have three Van Dyke pieces, and I can definitely see adding more. They are so full of personality. I wouldn’t mind a few more concrete bowl planters too. 🙂 —Pam

Lovely planter and arrangement. Vivero has such beautiful containers and combos.

So true that you can’t plant just one succulent.

Nope. They’re like potato chips. —Pam

You have great friends, as do I (just received a gift certificate to Portland Nursery). I love Aeoniums, but have had little luck with them. I guess you are not the one to ask for advice, since our climates are so different. I will be interested to see how yours fares, just the same.

My fingers are crossed, Ricki. I really love it and hope it thrives. —Pam

  5. How gorgeous! Pretty sweet friend!

    Yes indeed, Heather. —Pam

What a stunning gift. You are a lucky girl. I think the aeonium will live. I have one that I picked up in California several years ago. Not as full as yours but I don’t treat my plants very well, starving them most of the time!

I’m so glad to hear that, Jenny, from another Austin gardener. Do you have yours in bright shade, like other succulents? —Pam

  7. I like your twist on May Day, Pam. Your succulent wall is looking great!

What’s the twist, Jane? I admit to not being all that familiar with May Day rituals and didn’t even remember it was May Day until you mentioned it. Is it that I focused on foliage instead of flowers? (Just guessing.) —Pam

That triangular skeleton bowl is fabulous! lustlustlust … I just checked out the Rick Van Dyke site, using your link. Love those anemone (or hedgehog?)bowls, too.

    Right. Succulents are an addiction.

They are! And obviously so is Rick Van Dyke pottery. —Pam
