Deep purple and the moody blues

March 10, 2009

Did my title make you think of 1970s music? I’m talking flowers, don’t you know? Here’s a peek inside an ‘Amethyst Flame’ iris. Psychedelic, man!

Spiderwort (Tradescantia occidentalis ) isn’t giving me the blues. The honeybees love it too.

Can you dig it? Right on! I dug up this variegated agave pup from my old garden. The spiraling blue pot echoes the color of the bottle tree.

Groupies?

Peace, man.

You are so far ahead of us! My Spider Wort is just starting to grow. My iris are too. No blooms for a while yet here for those ones! Yours look so pretty!

I love the color and shape of that pot, Pam! It is one of my favorite colors in the garden. Makes the most of whatever you’ve got to plant for sure!

Where are my bellbottoms when I need them? What lovely hues of blue and purple, Pam. I think those are some of the prettiest colors in the garden, and you have lots of them.

  11. Robin says:

Love those moody blues! It hasn’t taken you long to get things looking great in your new yard.

  12. janet says:

Pam, pretty cool. (or should I say– You Rock) I think the Iris is so architectural. That Agave looks great in that blue pot. Really nice.

  13. I loooooove that bottle tree–and the blue agave pot is indeed “groovy.” It’s so interesting to see how different of a feel this garden already has from your old one, Pam. I think it must be because you are paying attention to its sense of place… 🙂

  14. Karl Katzke says:

Pam, I’m so jealous of your blooms and garden! Now, I just need to decide whether I’m green with envy, or some other color…

  15. I love your bottle tree!!

  16. kerri says:

Feeling groovy, Pam 🙂 Love those moody blues. I’m so glad to see you brought a ‘pup’ of the variegated Agave to your new garden. It looks wonderful in that beautiful blue pot. Enjoy those lovely blooms, and thanks for sharing them. Very cool! No need to tell you to chill out 🙂

  17. Monica says:

Aw, spiderwort and iris will be blooming for me in a month or so… hooray! Now I have “Peace Frog” by The Doors stuck in my head–I’m not sure how I got that from your title, but I like the song in any case! 🙂

  18. Someone just Twittered that today was Johnny Appleseed Day. You’ve so generously shared your Amethyst Flame irises with other Austin bloggers and they’re decorating all our posts this week…maybe we should designate a “Pammy Amethyst Root Day” in your honor ;-]
The Agave Pup does look groovy in the spiral pot – as good as a Lava Lamp.

Man, it took me a moment to realise that your flowers are growing outdoors ~ duh! The iris macro is gorgeous. It’s wonderful to see Iris and Spiderworts. A bit of cheer on a cold day.

  20. Pam/Digging says:

Thanks, everyone, for grooving out with me. We’re getting rain this week, which we so desperately needed, and I’m sure the garden will respond with another flush of spring growth and bloom. Stay tuned for more grooviness. —Pam

  21. Jean says:

Yep, I can dig it alright! I have the same kind of agave and am always surprised at how really fast those pups grow. Hooray for rain! I’m so glad you all are getting some. We’re getting some too, for which I’m grateful (dead? ooh, couldn’t help it!).
    Jean
Good one, Jean. I’m glad to hear you’re getting rain too. —Pam

  22. Terra says:

That’s a beautiful iris. I’ve been looking for a good online source for irises, but can’t seem to find one. I’ll be looking for this one!
I bought ‘Amethyst Flame’ several years ago at Barton Springs Nursery. You might call and see if they still carry it, Terra. —Pam

  23. Your garden is looking wonderful, Pam! So far, we’ve gotten 3 inches of rain. Wonderful! So everyone in our Wildscape should really start perking up.

  24. Those irises are beautiful. I am going to definitely have to get some like those. Love those stripes.
    Debbie

  25. Victoria says:

Far out, Pam! Fantastic colours. I’m sitting here admiring your flowers and realising that 40 years after I first heard Deep Purple, I am still wearing flared jeans… (I was very young at the time…)

  26. Lovely. I hope you’re playing all the appropriate music to them.
    –Kate

  27. laxpat says:

    Is your iris an arilbred?
Laxpat, I’m sorry, but I have no idea. I confess I had to Google “arilbred” just to know what you were talking about. This is an iris I picked up many years ago at a local nursery on a whim. —Pam

  28. You know me, I’m a sucker for anything purple. My computer’s wallpaper is a photo I took of the inside of an Iris; it looks a lot like your photo. My Iris is a mystery, as it was on the property when I bought it.
