High and low

September 10, 2006

The first oxblood lily bulb flowered today. I went out to give them all a deep soaking, as instructed by M. at Zanthan, and found this one blazing at the edge of the Lindheimer muhly grass.

I’m surprised by how tall the yellow bells have grown this summer. The tallest one is at least 7 feet. It’s kind of like seeing Big Bird out there when I look out my back windows.

The society garlic had a rough time of it at the end of the summer. This year was their first in my garden—in full sun and under drought conditions—and their leaves browned at the tips, and they stopped blooming for a while in protest. But cooler weather and a little rain have revived them, and they’re sending up new flowers.
