Night owls

I’ve always been a night owl, and right now we have a family of them in the garden. They sleep by day…

…and wake in late afternoon, ready to hunt.

I get a kick out of watching our screech owl pair deliver meal after meal to the owlets in the box. Swoop, land, lean in, drop mouse or snake or bird…

…turn, scope out the territory…

…take a quick breather…

…ready, set…

…launch! Time to hunt again. Owlets are hungry, y’all.

What time do you have to be watching in order to see them?
One of the owls — the male, I think — sits on a branch all day, so I can see him at any hour. But they get active at dusk and hunt when it gets dark.
How wonderful to be able to see them!
I’d trade you a peacock and his harem of peahens for the owl family in a nanosecond!
Hah! — no thanks, Kris! 😉
