How to attract dragonflies

July 15, 2009

How do you attract dragonflies to your garden? Simple. Build a pond and put a vertical plant in it.
This red dragonfly, which I spotted on a strappy leaf of the pond lily, skittishly flew away when I approached. But after buzzing back and forth across the yard for a few minutes, it settled back on its leaf and let me get close enough for a photo. I saw a few orange dragons buzzing around too, but they didn’t stop in for a visit, at least not while I was there.

In a bed near the pond, another pink rain lily (Zephryanthes ‘Labuffarosa’) opened this morning, dusted with sugar, as it seems.

The “marbled” coloration of ‘Black Marble’ taro, one of my new pond plants. Can you tell I’m enjoying my new pond?

Beautiful dragon fly. It is funny how they find all the vertical things in the garden.
I’m glad you’re enjoying your pond. Taros are some of the best plants… so diverse and so tropical.

Love the dragonfly pic! Your camera and lens take such nice macro shots. I bought a fantsy micro lens for my Nikon D70 and just haven’t gotten the hang of it yet — it’s pretty much worthless in low light and the depth of field is all wacky.

  5. We’ve had them land on the truck antenna where we could get a good photo. But that orange one is really dramatic as is the photo!

  6. Your close-up shots are amazing.

    So are we!

  8. I agree Pam. Ponds will bring them in. We have soooo many dragonflies! My kids (when they were young) used to be so scared of the dragons, but I always loved them. I even see tiny, tiny babies!

  9. What lens did you use to take this first shot? Fantastic, btw!
See my camera info in my sidebar, CIMS. And thanks! —Pam

I love the Rain Lily and Elephant Ear. I have no problem attracting Dragonflys and I have no water. They are also the biggest Dragonflys I have ever seen.
