Amaryllis & wicked agave art

January 31, 2010

Ding-dong, amaryllis calling! OK, it’s official—the neighbors think I’m nuts. But don’t you agree that my new green door is a good backdrop for the red-and-white candy stripes? This is one of my bargain-sale amaryllis from Target, which has turned into a bodacious blooming beauty.

Gorgeous color!

Speaking of color, I like this table runner for its bright-red, steely blue, and silvery gray color scheme, which echoes some of my favorite plant combos. Think red salvia paired with a big blue agave, with santolina or artemesia adding cool silver. Color-licious in a hot garden!

And speaking of agaves, they make good artistic subjects, you know. After Fresh Dirt blogged about Arizona artist Carolyn Schmitz‘s agave-shoe prints, this agave lover just couldn’t resist, and I treated myself to two of them. Here is Scorpion Country—agave leaves are the boot “leather,” and scorpion tails make up the decorative stitching and spurs.

Schmitz calls this one Agave Spikes. A writhing yellow-and-green Agave americana ‘Variegata’ is the backdrop for a pair of spike heels made from spiny agave leaves.
Agave humor is barbed and twisted.
