On the radio with Layanee & Garden Guys

July 03, 2008

After learning that Layanee of Ledge and Gardens co-hosts a call-in gardening radio show, Garden Guys, on Sundays in the Boston/Providence area, I wrote to tell her I’d listened to some of the shows online. I thought they were great—informative, educational, and engaging with their callers. To my surprise and delight, she responded by kindly inviting me to be a guest caller last Sunday.
What fun! I threw aside my apprehensions about dead air, Texas twang, and, oh, I don’t know, forgetting my own blog’s URL when asked for it and called in for a few minutes that morning. Layanee and Jim, one of the two Garden Guys, were friendly and easily conversational. It was like talking with fellow gardeners over a long-distance back fence. My thanks to them both and especially Layanee for having me on the show and making the experience so enjoyable.
If you like, you can listen to the segment via podcast on the Garden Guys site. For more information, read Layanee’s post “Digging Takes to the Airwaves“.

    Pam,
I read what layanee said and it is true…you are an elegant speaker! Had she been able to make the trip she would have seen how organized and gracious you and all the other Austin bloggers were. I love that you are getting air time and plan to listen to the podcast as soon as I download it to my ipod!

Thanks for the sweet compliments, Gail! I so wish Layanee could have made it to the Fling (curses to the airline that let her down), but talking with her by phone was a real pleasure. I haven’t had a moment to listen to the podcast myself but hope to soon. —Pam

Managed to find your section on the pod. You did a nice job. I did listen to a few of the comments and loved the one about using cotton gloves over rubber gloves to treat individual plants with glyphosate. Sure sounds better than the paintbrush technique which we have used.
    Jenny
Thanks for letting me know about that handy tip, Jenny. As I mentioned to Gail above, I haven’t had a chance to listen to the podcast of the show yet, but I intend to. —Pam

How fun Pam! I listened to the podcast this morning and really enjoyed it. Your conversation with the garden guys sounded very laid-back, relaxed, and friendly. As you said, it sounded like a conversation over a long-distance back fence.
The conversation felt that way to me too, Linda. I’m glad to know it sounded so to you. —Pam

  4. I haven’t listened to that podcast yet but will do so after I’ve visited some more blogs. Have a lot of catching up to do now that I’m back from my holidays.
I trust you had a great time on holiday, YE. I know how hard it can be to get caught up after a long vacation. Thanks for stopping by. —Pam

  5. Nancy Bond says:

I’ve listened and if you were at all nervous, it certainly didn’t come through. Kudos!
    Yea! Thanks, Nancy. —Pam

  6. Good for you! I would be scared to death to do that. (talk about a Texas accent!) I look forward to listening to the podcast.
I was a little nervous about making the call, Linda, but I went into a quiet room to do it and pretended no listeners existed and it was just a conversation with Layanee and the Garden Guys. That took away the nervousness until the end, when it reemerged and I forgot my URL. Ha! —Pam

  7. Frances says:

How wonderful Pam. I will be listening on the computer, no ipod here. But know you were your same friendly self, the only way you can be!
Thanks, Frances. I used to think of myself as quite the introvert, but I’m much more extroverted than I used to be. —Pam

  8. Pam – yet another Andy Warhol 15-minutes of fame. It’s one of those
small-world coincidences as I cohost a regional TV show in Santa Barbara
called Garden Wise Guys. If you want to take a peek, click over to
http://sbwaterlorg/LandscapeTV. Who knows? If you come visit Santa Barbara
you can grab a guest appearance on our show!
One technical matter – When I use your comment section, your blogroll intrudes into the
comment window and prevents the ability to view the last section of the white
box we type in. Might just be my machine, but it might be a bug in the template.
I have to keep hitting Shift-Return to force a line break before I run into the obstruction.
You might try commenting on your blog from someone else’s computer and see if it happens.
So you’re a garden guy too, eh? Boy, a TV appearance on your show would be wild! Maybe someday, if I’m lucky.
Thanks for letting me know about the comment field problem. I’ll look into it soon and see if it can be fixed. —Pam

  9. Pam – one glitch in the url I left. It’s http://sbwater.org/LandscapeTV. That’s
’cause of the blogroll blocking my view (and being a bad typist!).
I’ll check it out soon, Billy. Sorry about the blogroll issue. —Pam

  10. Robin says:

That is so exciting! I had no idea about Layanee and the radio program. I’ll have to try and listen tomorrow.
I know! She kept that close to her vest, didn’t she? I’m glad she finally blogged about it. It’s great to hear her on the show, and now we can all tune in and listen whenever we want. —Pam

  11. Layanee says:

Pam: I don’t know what we’ll do for an encore! Maybe you can be a seasonal regular! You know what to do! Thank you for the high praise of the show. There were actually all three of us there on Sunday, Sam was there also but since we hide in the radio, who would know! Jim has the strong New England accent! Well, maybe we all do but Jim actually pahks his cah. It is great fun but the 3:00 a.m. alarm on Sunday mornings is sometimes jarring! LOL. We will speak again and maybe to some of the other bloggers also. I hope you have started a trend! Thanks so much for calling and sharing your thoughts on gardening!
Layanee, you are a real pal to invite me on and promote my blog like you did. Thank you! Being on your show was such fun—I’d love to do it again sometime. So sorry to have overlooked Sam. When I have a moment to listen to the podcast, I’m sure I’ll hear him there too. Meantime, I hope to hear other garden bloggers make a guest appearance on the show. Please let us know in advance if that happens. I wouldn’t want to miss it! —Pam

  12. Frances says:

I have listened and so enjoyed the entire show. At first I though maybe it was the wrong one, since yours was after the commercials. HA. It was great to hear you and Layanee converse, just like being there. I think more call ins is a great idea too. You can practice your URL.
I do need to practice it! Frances, I hope to hear you on Layanee’s show one of these days. You’d be wonderful. —Pam

  13. ewa says:

    Pam,
Great tip, thank you. I didn’t know… have to check it now 🙂
    cheers,
Hope you enjoy it, Ewa. Thanks for stopping by. —Pam

  14. Diana Kirby says:

How cool, first t.v., now radio — you’re quite the star. Off to listen and learn.
I don’t know about that, Diana, but I usually say yes when something drops in my lap. 🙂 —Pam

  15. Garden Lily says:

Pam – It’s always a pleasure to visit your site. I’ve tagged you on my “Flowers and Weeds” blog for the 6 random facts. I hope you have time to participate, and enjoy the exercise!
Hi, Garden Lily. Thanks for thinking of me and for your kind words about my photos on your post. I’d like to participate if I can grab some spare time. Until then, happy digging! —Pam

  16. I haven’t had a chance to listen to the program yet. Like Frances, I don’t have an Ipod. I’m looking forward to listening.
You can listen on your computer, MMD. That’s what I did. —Pam

  17. At first I also thought I had to have an IPod, Pam – then I learned that Layanee’s show works on the computer and listened to it today. You did great, and the show is fun… but it was odd to realize that while your Southern lilt isn’t noticeable in Texas, it became apparent when contrasted with the callers, who had Eastern Seaboad accents of their own.
It was fun to hear Layanee speaking – and she gave the listeners good advice.
    Annie at the Transplantable Rose
Hi, Annie. Having grown up in S.C. but with O.K.-born parents, and having lived in T.X. for only 14 years, I probably have a mishmash of an accent. It’s not a strong Southern accent, but I’m sure it comes across that way in other regions. But, boy, did the Garden Guys have strong northeastern accents! —Pam

  18. Bren says:

Happy July Pam – Come over and see my new photos of the Autumn Color / Rudbeckia that is blooming in my gardens. It is a member of the coneflower family and I think you will enjoy it! Hard to find photos of this plant. I took these images yesterday afternoon during the rain.
LOVE your BLOG – as always!
    Happy Gardening – Bren
I’ll be over soon, Bren. Thanks for stopping by and for your kind comment. —Pam

  19. kerri says:

I was here a couple of nights ago Pam, and clicked the link to Layanee’s post, listened to the podcast, and forgot to come back and comment. I was beginning to nod off sitting at the computer, so it was time for some shut-eye.
What fun to chat live with Layanee and Jim! I had no idea that she did a garden talk show. It was neat to listen to your conversation and hear the accents. You don’t have much of a southern drawl at all, but as I remember, you’re a transplant, right?
Yes, I am a transplant from South Carolina, but although I grew up there I wasn’t a native there either. My parents were from Oklahoma, and I had some of their accent too. I used to get teased about my “Yankee” accent growing up in S.C., and teased about my southern accent when we visited family back in O.K. Isn’t that ironic? —Pam
