Lazing around in the garden

April 23, 2016

Sure, I meant to get up at sunrise this morning to plant a few new plants, prune some bamboo, and scrub out a small fountain. But we binge-watched last season’s Game of Thrones last night to get ready for Sunday’s season premier, and I’m dragging this morning. Still, there’s (almost) always time for a blog post to share the garden’s bounty, including the first royal-purple blossoms of ‘Etoile Violette’ clematis — a bit bug-chewed, but no matter.

I’m also noticing a good crop of Texas spiny lizards this spring. These fierce-looking but chicken-shy lizards usually dash for cover when I see them, but this young one hung out on a porch post yesterday, content with giving me side-eye.

So much for my own lazing around. I suppose it’s time to get a few things done. How about you?

Digging Deeper: News and Upcoming Events

I’ll be speaking on April 30, noon-12:30 pm, in Cedar Park, Texas, at Hill Country Water Gardens & Nursery’s Lily Blossom Festival. My free talk is called “How to Garden Water-Wise, Not Water-Wasteful.” An old proverb reminds us that The frog does not drink up the pond in which he lives. Don’t be a water-guzzling frog! I’ll be sharing my tips for making a garden that is water-wise, not water-wasteful. Stick around after my talk for a book signing, with autographed copies of Lawn Gone! and The Water-Saving Garden available for purchase.

Come see me at Festival of Flowers in San Antonio, May 28, time TBA. Learn more about water-saving gardening during my talk at San Antonio’s 19th annual Festival of Flowers. Get a signed copy of my book after the talk. Tickets to the all-day festival, which includes a plant sale and exchange, speakers, and a flower show, are available at the door: $6 adults; children under 10 free. Free parking.

Do you review? Have you read my new book, The Water-Saving Garden? If you found it helpful or inspirational, please consider leaving a review — even just a sentence or two — on Amazon, Goodreads, or other sites. Online reviews are crucial in getting a book noticed. I really appreciate your help!

I’m on Instagram as pamdigging. See you there!

How pretty! I’ve noticed some kind of big lizard in my garden… But it won’t sit still for pictures. Here’s to a productive weekend!

The bigger the lizard, the more of a chicken it is, at least in my garden. Perhaps that’s why they get big — they’re sufficiently wary. 🙂 —Pam

  2. I enjoy seeing your wildlife. I am not doing a darned thing here today. A good day to be lazy.

tidying up after yesterday’s storm. Fierce wind, and some rain.

    • Pam/Digging says:

I hope no damage will be found in your garden, Diana. I ended up doing a bit of tidying up in my own garden this afternoon as well. —Pam

    Binge-watching is like potato chips…

Sometimes a lazy day is warranted.

Giving yourself permission for a lazy day is one of the joys of life. Enjoy!

  6. Oh that Etoile Violette’ clematis is a real beauty!

  7. Wendy Moore says:

The Clematis is gorgeous! I think I’ve seen a couple of those spiny lizards lately on my brick – love them!

Enjoy Game of Thrones tonight! 🙂

    • Pam/Digging says:

I used to see only TX spiny lizards here, Wendy, and I missed the anoles that I used to see in my old garden. But lately I’ve been seeing both, which makes me happy. —Pam

Feeling your back pain. Too much weed pulling and planting. But I’m resting it while I read your blog. Still have 5 plants to get in the ground. Thinking this evening when it cools down a little will be soon enough.

  9. We’ve been so bad about binge-watching shows in the past. LOST was a bad one… I know it’s 3am but let’s finish this DVD! haha

We’ve also had a gazillion spiny lizards this Spring! Even found a baby one in our bed one afternoon! I love them. I felt so bad, I found little burrows all over my raised huegel beds the other day and filled most of them in with my foot. Then found out it was probably where spiny lizards had laid eggs. Oops. At least I’d left some undisturbed.

We’ve also had some resident toads this year, which makes me happy. Good memories of catching them at night as a kid.

Isn’t it awesome how having a chemical free garden invites so much great wildlife?

Thanks for sharing the pics, love the clematis!

In your bed! Well, that’s a little cozy, isn’t it? I found an anole on my fireplace screen yesterday. He was looking a little pale, but hopefully he made a recovery once I got him outside. And yes, cheers to a wildlife-friendly garden! —Pam
