Little garden creatures

September 05, 2009

This red dragonfly makes a daily appearance at the stock-tank pond, and it is really quite tame about letting me approach.

He has suffered a wing injury of late, though it doesn’t seem to slow him down.

The blue dragonfly comes around less frequently and proves to be more skittish. A more powerful zoom lens would be a help in capturing its beauty.

An earth-toned butterfly dropped in for a visit recently too. The Salvia greggii is beginning to rebloom, little guy. Hang in there!

And after hearing from several other Austin garden bloggers that their oxblood lilies (Rhodophiala bifida) were coming up, I carefully poked around in my own garden and found a few shoots. Yea!
By the way, congratulations to Austin gardener Helen D., who won my local giveaway of The Perennial Care Manual after the first person whose name was drawn didn’t claim the prize. Lucky Helen! Enjoy the book and happy digging.

Handsome creatures in your garden Pam. That one looks like something took a bite out of his wing. That lily emerging is quite a good picture, full of promise.

  2. I love dragonflies, Pam, but haven’t seen the red one before. You’ve reminded me I should go sit down by the pond for a while and see what’s buzzing around down there. I don’t know these lilies so I’m looking forward to their growing and flowering later this season.

  3. Love that orange dragonfly Pam. I have seen a few around my pond this summer, but more of the green lately.

I love seeing the details on the red dragonfly!

Amazing photos! I wonder why I don’t get any dragonflies. Maybe my wine barrel is too small? Or the goldfish eats the eggs?

  6. HOW do you get such great close-ups of the dragonflies, Pam? You must have some magic spell to keep them so still… 🙂

  7. Wow on those pictures! The detail is just amazing.

The Red Dragonfly is a beauty even with a bite out of his wing. So glad your lilly is making it’s way up. It should pop with the rain we have gotten! Yay!

Your dragonfly pictures are awesome- what camera settings do you use?
Thanks, Dee (and everyone!). I used the zoom lens on my point-and-shoot Canon to get these images. —Pam

There are no dragonflies in my garden. Your pictures allow me to see what I can’t see here. Thanks, Pam!

Wonderful detail in those red dragonfly pics, Pam! They have such pretty wings. I like your little butterfly too. Looks like a pearl on the tip of its antennae 🙂
Those lilies are going to be gorgeous, I’m sure.
Thanks for visiting. It’s lovely to hear from you.
I see your temps have gone down a tiny bit. We’ve had glorious gardening weather these past several days. I hope you get some too, very soon.
