Screech owlet sighting!

May 14, 2015

My husband wins the prize for first sighting of a screech owlet in our owl box this year. He spotted a green-eyed, elfin face peeking through the hole this morning. This afternoon, I saw it too.

He or she was tentative but curious, even after I stepped out on the deck with my camera. As it gazed around, I imagined it was wondering, where’s Mom?

There she is. Perched in a crepe myrtle by the deck, she gave me a wary glance but soon settled back into a half-lidded snooze.

I hope to see one or two more little faces in the door before it’s time for them to fly the nest.

Baby birds are so exciting! Alas, although I have birdhouses in my garden, no birds have ever set up shop in them.

This always makes me so happy. I am so glad they are alive and well.

It’s so adorable! I’ve spotted plenty of birds in my garden this spring, but no raptor sightings yet.

Just adorable. What a treat to have them happy in your yard!

  5. We are pleased to have a new little water snake visiting our ponds after a couple years without any of these enigmatic creatures. The critters sure do travel in this kind of weather. I hope our tree lizards return when the sun comes out!

Daylily show and sale is Saturday the 23rd afternoon at Zilker — come see us and our 300 dayliy blooms if your in town!

You’re one of the few pond gardeners I’ve ever heard saying he’s happy about a snake in the pond, Tom. I always enjoy seeing them at the Wildflower Center ponds. Good luck with the daylily sale! —Pam

  6. Of all the wonderful things you share from your garden, the owlets have to be the most “wonderfulest”. Makes my day just to see that cute, curious face.

Absolutely the cutest little raptor on the block. It is no wonder we get caught up with these adorable little owls!

That face is so cute! (S)he almost looks frightened. Mom is a gorgeous bird. Your owlet posts always warm the cockles of my tiny, hard heart!
