Open Days Austin . . . A Teaser

October 22, 2006

The Garden Conservancy held its Open Days garden tour here in Austin yesterday. I spent six hours touring six gardens and had a terrific time. The gardens were gorgeous, inspiring, and yet, with one exception, accessible, meaning you felt you could borrow ideas for plant combinations, decor, and even some of the hardscaping in your own garden. Most of the gardens felt not only elegant but comfortable. You could envision yourself padding out to a bench in your slippers to work the morning’s crossword puzzle.
I hope you’ll join me for a virtual tour of the gardens, one per day, starting with the David-Peese garden. By the end of the week, you’ll have seen them all. To entice you, here are a few of my favorite images from the day.

  1. Wonderful, Pam! I saw several of the gardens, but you have such a photographer’s eye! It will be fun to see if we noticed the same things.
You’ve already pointed out one element we both liked – and I have a baggie of Amaranth seeds to prove it!

Those salvias get me every time – and in combination with prickly pear, no less!
I’d be very nervous about opening up my garden to a tour like this, but really appreciate those who do. I love seeing how others combine plants and being able to steal good ideas.
