Japanese maple at peak fall color

December 17, 2010

After school today my daughter and I simply stood amid the green branches of the Japanese maple at the front corner of the house, immersing ourselves in precision-cut, flaming red leaves. Blushing hotly, the maple is at its peak of fall color, and the very first leaves are beginning to curl and drop. When I ducked out of the branches after our reverie, several tiny red leaves were clinging to my fuzzy jacket. Very soon the show will be over, so I’m spending a lot of time just gazing at it.

Cherish it as long as you can. It won’t be long and you won’t have those lovely red leaves.

    Stunning color Pam!
It seems every time I take the plunge and try to plant a maple in the ground I execute it’s death warrant!
This one is a beautiful specimen.

  3. Yes, soak it in while you can. That gorgeous color is oh, so fleeting. Japanese maples are my favorites in ornamental trees. You’ve got a beauty!

I am sure you will appreciate the next phase as they collect in a pool of color on the ground.

  5. I’m amazed yours still looks this beautiful! Mine have dropped their leaves weeks ago. Glad to see your daughter enjoys nature’s beauty as much as you do – good job, Mom!

Always amazes me how well that tree has done for you. Every time I see a picture of it, I reconsider adding one to my garden.

  7. Stunning. I love acers. Makes me want to go and look at the photos I took of mine this Autumn. Outside it is all snow, ice and bare branches.

  8. Yum. You know how I love them.~~Dee
